Connections - Summer 2005

Chairman's Message

With the 50 years celebration of the age of the Bracknell Town Council and its achievements over this period of time in the growth of the town the Nike Group offers its congratulations to the Town Council Members, past and present, for a job well done.

There is no doubt at all that we have seen a remarkable growth and the Nike Group of Companies is proud to be a part of this growth through its 38 years of a business relationship with the town. It is during this period of time that the group has grown to be a main employer within the community. It is during this period of time that the principal companies of the group have grown to be recognised as essential service providers for hotel accommodation, motor vehicles and servicing, petroleum, building supplies, printing, sports retailing and, most of all, entertainment through its leisure facilities for ice skating, ice karting, figure skating, ice hockey, skiing and boarding.

The John Nike Leisuresport Complex also runs a junior development programme for figure skating, ice hockey, skiing and snow boarding. Each development programme has a club system providing tuition in each activity giving members the opportunity to take part in competitions and club affairs. The Complex includes a Health Club, snooker room, bars, restaurant, cafeteria and function rooms that may be hired for special occasions. General enquiries should be made on 01344 789000.

To continue this growth, the 60's image of the Bracknell town centre has to be replaced with a modern profile and, frankly, the sooner the planned redevelopment of town starts the better it will be for all in the community. Far too many years have passed by with differing schemes being rejected and the present state of the shops and commercial buildings is appalling. I accept that both councils have been trying for a considerable time to satisfy the wishes of the Bracknell population for the provision of the 'ideal' along with meeting the strict regulations of the governing bodies for a town revival but what everyone wishes to see is a commencement. Hopefully, this is not too far away and 2006 should see the beginning of a long awaited revitalization.

Despite ones feelings about the state of the town centre it has to be admitted that the 50 years growth has brought about a well-landscaped town that is to be admired. I have seen this growth during the 42 years of my presence in the area and I am proud to be so strongly associated with Bracknell as a town and a borough.

I have already described the entertainment on offer at our Bracknell leisure complex and this is now enhanced with the new Amen Corner golf range that opened on the Whitsun weekend. This practice facility is proving to be a favourite and will help to keep our hotel guests entertained during their stay.

The Coppid Beech Hotel and The Swan at Streatley have a great deal to offer for a summer break with so much to see in Berkshire. Both hotels have a selection of leisure packages on offer that are sure to please and, later in the year, the luxurious Venus Spa will be unveiled at The Swan providing more pampering facilities.

Talking of being pampered, the development of the new Lexus showroom is well underway and is due to open in September. Our staff would love to see you there to share the joy of driving a Lexus so why not make it a date. You don't have to buy to enjoy the quality of the vehicle but I challenge you leave without revealing great admiration and a wish to own one! Of course, that is enough for our salesmen and they will then coax you and coax you until, who knows…

Jubilee Building Supplies is set up to provide you with decking and hard landscaping materials to make your summer a joy as you spruce up the garden. There isn't a much better way to relax than sitting on the patio sipping an evening cocktail to soothe away the aches and pains of the day while admiring your handy-work, is there? So why not make a start by visiting our building supplies yard in Amen Corner.

Whilst in Amen Corner during a weekend you will be able to refuel your car; look at a new car; view the bathroom showroom at Jubilee Building Supplies; place your order for the decking; then book your Sunday lunch at the Coppid Beech Hotel. Any younger members of your family can go ice skating, skiing or snow boarding, if they are bored, leaving you free to browse. It's worth a visit…

This issue of Connections reveals so many ideas and solutions from across the Nike Group of Companies, all geared to help you make the most of your summer.

The next issue will be our Winter Edition when the excitement of Christmas will surround us again. In the meantime, have a fantastic summer.

John Nike OBE
Chairman

Bees and Tigers

All good things must come to an end - and sadly, that includes the Nike Group of Companies' involvement in the worlds of professional ice hockey and basketball. After years of funding and managing the Bracknell Bees (17 years) and Thames Valley Tigers (20 years) teams, John Nike, Chairman, has decided it's time to pass the baton to someone else.

Over the years, the Chairman's support has steered both teams to significant national success, and made a huge impact in the local community.

The Thames Valley Tigers, one of the premier professional basketball teams in the UK, has a history of winning trophies. It was League Champion in 1994, National Cup winner in 1989, 1997 and 1998, National Trophy winner in 1989 and 1995 and League Trophy winner in 1993 and 1994.

The club's School of Basketball, set up in conjunction with John Nike Leisuresport, fielded teams from under 10s through to under 18s. It also runs basketball camps for local kids in the school holidays, giving them the opportunity to try their hand at the sport and receive expert tuition.

The Bracknell Bees put its home town well and truly on the map when it came to professional ice hockey, and always enjoyed good crowds at home games. The Bees were crowned Division Champions in 1990, Superleague Champions in 2000 and British National League Champions in 2005. In fact the Bees did the double in 2005, also winning the Winter Cup, while enjoying one of the best seasons ever in the club's history.

The club is committed to developing junior ice hockey teams for local kids, and has a major input into Playing for Success - the children's education programme operated at the John Nike Leisuresport complex.

John Nike would like to thank all those that have supported and been involved with both teams through the years - the fans, helpers, sponsors, players and coaches.

Summer fun at The Swan

Afternoon tea, a round of golf, Sunday lunch by the river, all the fun of the races - these are just a taster of what you can enjoy during a stay at The Swan at Streatley this summer.

The hotel sits on the picturesque banks of the River Thames in the heart of the Berkshire countryside, and is an ideal location for visiting many of the summer's events.

The Swan is down stream from both the Marlow and Henley regattas, a stone's throw from the Goring and Streatley regatta, and it sits between Windsor and Newbury racecourses.

If you're not planning on venturing out for the day, you can explore the hotel's surrounding countryside or take a trip down the river on one of the hotel's electric launches with a picnic, freshly prepared by chef. Or for guests wanting a bit more action, there's the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf, horse riding or clay pigeon shooting - all organised by the hotel.

The Swan also promises a delightful experience for your taste buds. With the fine dining menu available at Cygnetures, the hotel's two AA rosette gourmet restaurant, and the chance to take afternoon tea or feast on a Sunday roast on the riverside terrace, your palate is literally spoilt for choice.

For music fans, Goring Jazz Society is hosting a weekend 'Jazz Fest' in the village of Streatley from 23 to 25 September, when a host of live, acoustic bands will play at the village hall, on the green and in some of the local pubs. The event will be opened by renowned jazz singer George Melly. On the Saturday, the festival will spread to The Swan's own private island from 1.30pm until 9pm where, as well as some great music, the hotel will be laying on a barbecue and refreshments. Tickets allowing hotel guests to roam between the various venues will be available.

So whether you're after a romantic retreat, relaxing getaway or a fun-packed weekend, The Swan has something for everyone this summer.

New Executive Head Chef at CBH

There's a new Executive Head Chef at the Coppid Beech Hotel - Paul Zolik has taken over the role from Neil Thrift, who is moving on to pastures (or kitchens!) new.

Paul first joined the Hotel in 1997 as a sous-chef and worked his way up, becoming premier sous-chef and then Head Chef, before moving into the Executive Head Chef position.

His previous career history includes stints at prestigious hotels including the Bath Spa Hotel and the Royal Berkshire Hotel in Ascot. He has also worked in several restaurants, including the renowned Langan's Brasserie in London.

When it comes to his passion for food, Paul's tastes are eclectic. He said: “I like to mix East and West together - I love Oriental food as well as hot and spicy flavours, but also classic French and Italian styles.”

His plans for Rowans, the Coppid Beech Hotel's two AA rosette restaurant, are straightforward: “If it works well and people enjoy it, we'll keep doing it,” Paul said.

“We're going to build on our strengths - we'll continue using top quality local produce, keep our cooking methods simple, and use natural flavours - while being a touch more adventurous. For example, I'd like to incorporate ideas from Bulgarian and Polish cuisine.”

To book a table at Rowans restaurant, please call the Coppid Beech Hotel on 01344 303333.

Sno-tubes 1st anniversary

One year ago, John Nike Leisuresport centres across England and Wales launched Sno-tubes, and over the last 12 months they have taken the UK by storm.

As the centres gear up to welcome many Sno-tube enthusiasts over the coming summer months, Connections caught up with Andy Rushton, Centre Manager at Chatham to find out why the new activity - where you take to the slope in a giant inflatable inner-tube - has become such a phenomenal success.

Andy said: “Sno-tubes appeal to all ages. It's a fun activity; exhilarating but safe - especially on PERMA-SNOW™ the safer artificial surface. It's an activity that you can try straight away, with no instruction required like with skiing or snowboarding.”

Look out for Sno-tubes at your nearest John Nike Leisuresport centre.

PERMA-SNOW™ update

More people than ever before are taking to the John Nike Leisuresport slopes - thanks to PERMA-SNOW™.

The revolutionary new dry-slope surface, developed and produced by Techmat 2000, has been a big hit - especially among those who have previously been too anxious to have a go at winter sports for fear of injury.

PERMA-SNOW™, which is described as a 'safer surface', compared to traditional surfaces, has attracted more visitors to try skiing and snowboarding and several John Nike Leisuresport centres have seen numbers double at open practice.

Tom Baldry, Manager of Swadlincote Ski and Snowboard Centre, told Connections: “We have never seen so many riders and the Snowboarding Club here loves PERMA-SNOW™. It provides a much softer landing than the traditional diamond-shaped brush matting and this gives people more confidence.”

If you want to give PERMA-SNOW™ a go, contact your nearest John Nike Leisuresport Centre - details of which can be found on the back page.

Playing for Success

You'll always find plenty of action at the John Nike Leisuresport complex in Bracknell, but look behind one door, and you'll find a lot of busy brains too!

Since 2002, the complex has provided a room for Playing for Success, a national government initiative dedicated to boosting children's key skills in an exciting and motivational sports environment.

The scheme is aimed at children aged between nine and 13, who are not achieving their best at school. It gives them the opportunity to develop their literacy and numeracy skills, together with their confidence and self-esteem, outside school hours.

The room at the John Nike Leisuresport complex is equipped with the latest information and communication technology (ICT) facilities, including web-enabled laptops and video and media equipment. Learning support is provided by mentors, and a qualified tutor.

Kevin Hutchings, who runs Playing for Success in Bracknell, said: “Our links with the John Nike Leisuresport complex have proved extremely beneficial. The 250 local children who come through our doors each year learn through fun projects like making music, creating cartoons and producing films of the complex. We also hold celebrations where kids receive achievement certificates and John Nike Leisuresport vouchers for activities like ice-skating. We hope our association will continue for some time to come.”

Venus Spa

Discover the Romans' beauty secrets while relaxing in the quintessential English surroundings at The Swan at Streatley's new Venus Spa.

Bringing a little of ancient Rome to the banks of the River Thames, the Venus Spa encompasses all aspects of beauty therapy within a modern, relaxing environment which offers a tranquil retreat to those seeking solace.

The spa, which is due to open in the summer, was designed by Nike Design Interiors and houses a mineral pool - modelled on the famous Roman baths - solariums, a sauna, steam room and treatment rooms. A Mediterranean theme has been carried throughout the entire spa with pillars and busts surrounding the pool and elegant murals adorning the walls. A white marble statue of Venus forms a central feature as you walk through to the spa area. The gymnasium has been fitted out with the latest workout equipment to complement the refurbishment and is colour themed throughout. An extension to the Roman influence will be a newly landscaped section of the grounds to provide a Mediterranean garden setting for rest and meditation.

Harry King, the designer, worked closely with John Nike, Chairman, to bring about the wish for a revitalised health club at The Swan to provide a luxury and quality that is becoming to the area. Harry said: “A drawing board never really reflects the true image and we are looking forward to seeing the completion of the works so that the design concept may be seen as a reality.”

Xmas taster at the hotels

Christmas is the season to be jolly, and what better way to enjoy it than to let one of the Nike Group of Companies' prestigious hotels do all the hard work for you?

Festive dining
The Swan at Streatley and the Coppid Beech Hotel will both be hosting party nights throughout November and December. Groups of colleagues, friends or family can enjoy a festive menu with all the trimmings in the two AA rosette-winning restaurants: Cygnetures (at The Swan) or Rowans (at the Coppid Beech Hotel).

Or, if you're after a private event, both hotels have a selection of suites that can cater for varied numbers of guests - you can even choose to have your celebration on the Magdalen College barge, moored on the River Thames alongside The Swan at Streatley.

Christmas Day
On the big day itself both the hotels will be hosting Christmas celebrations, giving you the opportunity to take the weight off your feet and leave all the preparations (and the cleaning up afterwards) to the hotel staff. The Coppid Beech Hotel
The Coppid Beech Hotel will be serving Christmas luncheon in Rowans, its formal restaurant, for £78.95 per adult and £39.25 per child under 12. There will be live music from the resident pianist and gifts for children, as well as complimentary crackers, hats and novelties.

For a more family-oriented celebration, lunch will also be available in the Sequoia Suite at £68.95 per adult and £34.50 per child under 12, with live music and a table entertainer to get you into the Christmas spirit.

The Swan at Streatley
The Swan at Streatley will be hosting a traditional Christmas lunch in the Icknield Suite. Bring your family together in elegant surroundings with a real festive feel for just £85 per adult and £39.50 for children under 12.

The Swan at Streatley's house party
For those who want to make Christmas extra special, The Swan at Streatley invites you to come and enjoy the intimate atmosphere of the hotel in its picturesque setting for a traditional Christmas house party.

Guests will arrive on Christmas Eve for afternoon tea in the drawing room and then, as dusk falls, they can join the Goring and Streatley torchlight procession for carol singing around a bonfire. Afterwards, a champagne reception will provide a chance to meet other guests, followed by a candlelit dinner in Cygnetures restaurant.

Christmas Day begins with a cooked breakfast and the opportunity to take part in the village treasure hunt, before sitting down to enjoy a wonderful Christmas lunch during which Santa promises to make an appearance.

And the fine dining doesn't stop there. After a lazy afternoon, The Swan at Streatley's Head Chef and his team will serve a fabulous buffet dinner.

Guests will then be treated to breakfast on Boxing Day morning.

The two-night house party break costs just £299 and, if you fancy extending your stay, a special rate of £65 is available for additional nights.

New Year's Eve
If you still haven't decided how to celebrate the New Year, then both the Coppid Beech Hotel and The Swan at Streatley will be hosting fabulous events to ensure you see in 2006 in style.

The Coppid Beech's black-tie Black and White Ball kicks off with a champagne welcome followed by a gourmet dinner, dancing to a live band and a disco, and the chance to try your hand on the casino tables.

The Swan at Streatley's black-tie Gala Dinner Dance will provide guests with an evening of fabulous food, starting with champagne, and followed by a five course banquet and entertainment from a live jazz band in Cygnetures restaurant and a disco in the Icknield Suite.

Tickets to both events are available at a reduced rate of £99 if booked before 1 December, and cost £105 after that date.

Review of ski sales

Skiers and snowboarders across the land flocked to the Leisuresport World ski sales at Bracknell and Chatham this February.

In fact, people literally trekked through the snow to make it to Chatham's sale, which was held at Bridgewood Manor Hotel, while the Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell was just as packed with bargain hunters.

Alan Connor, Manager of Leisuresport World, said: “With popular clothing brands like Helly Hansen, Salomon and White Rock on offer, the sales proved to be a huge success.”

If you missed out, don't worry - there will be future sales held at Bracknell and Plymouth in November, just in time to prepare you for the next ski season.

JNLL involved in National Curriculum

John Nike Leisuresport is committed to helping schools provide children with the best education.

Across the UK, schools, colleges and universities are recognising the first-class facilities available at John Nike Leisuresport centres, and are using them as a location for Physical Education (PE) lessons and GCSE and 'A' level PE assessments.

And, to help schools ensure that National Curriculum guidelines are met, John Nike Leisuresport instructors are structuring learning and working on a consultancy basis with teachers, using the John Nike Leisuresport ability grades as a model for the scale used to assess pupils' progress.

The centres have also been chosen by university students to study as part of their final year dissertations for business, marketing and leisure industry degrees as they provide an excellent example of a successful business.

Alex King, Manager at Plymouth, said: “It is very rewarding to know that we are helping with young peoples' education, and a great reflection of the high standards at John Nike Leisuresport.”

Llandudno and the community

The North Wales coastline is famous for more than just its grand castles - it's also home to the Llandudno Ski and Snowboard Centre.

Perched on top of the Great Orme cliffside in the aptly named 'Happy Valley' gardens, the John Nike Leisuresport Centre is as big a focal point in the community as its medieval neighbours - but much more inviting.

The centre played host to the Pioneer newspaper's 'Child of the Year' event in April. This year's winner was five-year-old Leon Wellings-Jones who was chosen for the title after bravely coping with a debilitating eye disease. Leon picked up his award from Lesley French, Graduate Trainee Manager and was presented with free skiing lessons and tickets to ride the Cresta Run toboggan.

And, for three days in June, Llandudno was transported back to yesteryear when the Three Castles Welsh Classic Car Trial came to town. The Ski and Snowboard Centre welcomed hundreds of the event's competitors to unwind after a long day's driving by enjoying a night of sno-tubing, tobogganing and skiing, and refuelling for the following day with a fondue, barbecue and buffet.

John Nike Leisuresport, Llandudno, is also showing its commitment to developing the sports stars of tomorrow by sponsoring the 'most improved athlete' category in the Conway Sports Awards. The annual ceremony will take place this autumn so watch this space for the name of the winner.

But it's not just customers and holidaymakers that love to visit John Nike Leisuresport, Llandudno. The centre seems to have left quite an impression on Radio One presenter and TV celebrity Vernon Kay, who recently promoted it to his listeners as a favourite place to visit when he's in the area.

Annual communications day

In June, the Nike Group of Companies 'pulled together' for some fun and games at their sixth Annual Communications Day.

The event, which gives the group's companies an annual opportunity to come together, involved some light-hearted team-building exercises and mental challenges, as well as a barbecue and night out on the tiles at the Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell.

After congregating at the hotel, each company's team competed in a host of games, including bouncy castle volley ball, blind sheep (a task where people were blindfolded and guided by other team members) and mental oblivion (puzzles designed to test mental ability).

The afternoon's activities culminated in a final task where each team had to build a sail - and, to everyone's surprise, when these were launched they all joined together to form one huge banner displaying the Nike Group of Companies logo. This was to symbolise the day's theme of 'pulling together' - showing that all the separate teams are united under one company. The day also saw John Nike, Chairman, award X of X (to be confirmed) the coveted 'Employee of the Year' title which, along with the glory, included two tickets to see a West End production and one night's accommodation in a London hotel.

Staff were then treated to a barbecue and free entry into Après, the Coppid Beech Hotel's nightclub, to celebrate the day's achievements in style. All agreed that it was a huge success.

Lightfoots

When Shell relaunched its Helix® motor oil range this May, it chose Lightfoots petrol station in Bracknell as the only UK location to debut its brand new promotional display.

Greg Walsh, Manager, explained: “Lightfoots, Bracknell, is a very busy site that sells a high quantity of lubricants and was therefore an ideal location for Shell to test its campaign.”

The new layout has received positive customer feedback and helped to boost sales of Helix® oil at Lightfoots and, consequently, Shell has decided to roll out the display to all sites across the UK.

Shell has reformulated its Helix® range with active cleaning agents which give a smoother, quieter drive. Why not drop into the Bracknell or Crowthorne station to check out the range for yourself and get your hands on a top-up bag that's yours free when you buy a litre or more of any of the Helix® motor oils?

Or, better still, take advantage of your chance to win a 'dream car' worth £60,000. Every time you fill up with Optimax®, Shell's premium petrol, you'll receive a pack of six 'Win a Dream Car' cards. Collect all 24 cards in the set and you'll win a car of your choice from the collection, which includes exclusive models from BMW and Jaguar. Both promotions run until 6 July.

Bocam Park

Nike Design is moving! The practice drew up the plans for the development known as Bocam Park in Wales, which is now complete - and it's moving in.

Chris Skilton, Manager, told Connections: “Nike Design had already planned to move office so with Bocam Park - a brand new, attractive development conveniently located just off the M4 - on our doorstep, we thought 'where better'!”

The first phase of the complex is a 64,000 sq ft area consisting of seven separate office buildings, located just outside Bridgend. Nike Design acted as the developer's architects, handling all planning aspects and masterplanning the site on behalf of Macob Projects Ltd.

Nike Design is now in the process of drawing up plans for Phase Two of the building project, which will extend the complex by a further 110,000 sq ft - so keep your eyes peeled in future editions of Connections for the latest progress!

Toyota news

As well as the launch of a new model, Toyota has a lot to be proud of this year, with a Royal accreditation and sales that are soaring - the sky really is the limit.

The Royal seal of approval Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd won the 2005 Queen's Award for International Trade for its outstanding contribution to British exports between 2002 and 2004.

Hein Van Gerwen, Toyota Manafacturing UK's Managing Director, said: “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award. It recognises our continued focus on superior quality and the company's commitment to delivering customer satisfaction across the globe.”

Prius in popular demand As well as being the latest accessory for Hollywood celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron, the Toyota Prius has seen phenomenal demand in the UK. The latest figures revealed record sales - more than double for the same period last year.

Dubbed the world's cleanest car, the Prius owes its popularity to its environmentally friendly performance and efficiency, while maintaining exceptional comfort and style.

And with the Prius's exemption from the London Congestion Charge, which is set to rise to £8 this July, owners can make a potential saving of £2,000 per annum.

To test drive the Prius, or any of the Toyota range, contact Octagon Toyota Bracknell on 01344 789888 or Reading on 0118 975 1300.

Lexus GS

Lexus has launched the all new, third generation GS - the first model to display the L-finesse design principles that will shape the new generation of Lexus vehicles.

The dynamically powerful lines and proportions of the luxury sports saloon's exterior carry through into the elegantly styled cabin, which boasts the latest technology while offering optimum comfort.

Exceptional safety comes as standard with the new GS, which was awarded a five star 'best in class' rating by Euro NCAP - its highest accolade. Ten airbags protect the driver and passengers in both the front and rear of the vehicle, while the optional Adaptive Cruise Control ensures the car is always kept a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

The new GS is available with a choice of two engines. The GS300 is powered by a 3.0-litre V6, and the GS430 is equipped with a 4.3-litre V8. Both models house a six-speed automatic gearbox, speed sensitive power steering and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) to ensure excellent ride comfort and effortless manoeuvring.

To test drive the new GS, or any of the Lexus range, call Octagon Bracknell on 01344 789888 or Reading on 0118 975 8877.

Lexus awards

Lexus has gone for gold and proved it is still Britain's most well-respected car brand.

For the fifth consecutive year, Lexus has topped the JD Power and Associates UK Customer Satisfaction Study - in association with What Car? magazine - and picked up the 2005 Gold Award.

Lexus's outstanding workmanship was, once again, demonstrated with a staggering score of 923 out of 1,000 in the quality/reliability category, and it left BMW floundering behind in second place in the vehicle appeal section.

A further accolade came when Lexus was named Best Manufacturer in the 2005 Driver Power report. Over 50,000 people voted in key areas including performance, quality and reliability, resulting in Lexus retaining the title for the fourth consecutive year.

And it's not just customers that rate Lexus - the National Franchised Dealers' Association (NFDA) voted Lexus the number one dealer franchise and highlighted vehicle supply, profit, potential training and warranty as particularly positive areas.

To contact your nearest Lexus showroom, call Octagon Bracknell on 01344 789888 or Reading on 0118 975 8877.

VE60 Tea Dance

To mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day (8 May 1945) the Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell held a '40s style tea dance, giving people the chance to reminisce and take a nostalgic trip back in time to the day the war ended in Europe.

Visitors were treated to afternoon tea and music from the era - provided by live quartet the Toe Tappers - and to make the afternoon even more authentic the hotel's staff dressed in wartime clothing.

Almost 100 people flocked from miles around to the event, which was held on 6 May and, by all accounts it was an afternoon to remember.

One visitor, John West, told Connections: “It was a thoroughly memorable experience. The Eccles cakes and cream horns were out of this world, the music was wonderful and everyone got up for a dance, even Rose Lawson, my 91-year-old neighbour! It was terrific!”
